Justice Tibatemwa Publication on Electoral Justice Unveiled at Inaugural Judges, Jurists Summit
At the recently concluded "Inaugural All Africa Judges and Jurists Summit" held in Nairobi, 17-19th September 2024, one of the topics discussed was Electoral Justice in Africa.
One of the activities at the Summit was the "release" of a publication entitled "Enhancing Electoral Justice in Uganda's Parliamentary Elections: The Search for Dependable Precedent" authored by Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza of Uganda's Supreme Court and Dr. Busingye Kabumba, School of Law, Makerere University.
Acknowledging that the electoral laws in many of the countries represented at the Summit were in pari materia with Uganda’s law, the relevance of the publication to the work of other jurisdictions was recognized.
The power of research to give legitimacy to calls for improvement and reform of laws was underscored.
Copies of the book were distributed to representatives of Judiciaries.
Chief Justices, Judges and Jurists from across Africa attended the meeting - Benin, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, the Seychelles, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Uganda. Representatives from Regional bodies - the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights also participated in the meeting as well as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.
